On the occasion of the exhibition »Byzantium & the West. 1000 forgotten years, "which the Roman-Germanic Central Museum Mainz, in collaboration with the Schallaburg, a Renaissance castle near Melk, showed there in 2018, accompanying the exhibition, the volumes 9,1 and 9,2 of the series Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident "Menschen, Bilder, Sprache, Dinge. Wege der Kommunikation zwischen Byzanz und dem Westen" has been published. Volume 9.1 with the additional title "Bilder und Dinge" is now also available for download in Open Access at the Propylaeum eBOOKS. The online position of Volume 2 "Bilder und Worte" is in the planning stage. The contributions in the volumes highlight the varied and variable relationships between the Latin West and the Byzantine Empire. The volumes are structured according to the media of communication. Consequently, the thematic themes of works of art, pictorial concepts and places are the focus of discussion in Volume 9.1.
