The Diachronic Frequency of Latin Words is an innovative resource that gives statistical information about the chronological development of the use of Latin words throughout the history of the language, from the fourth century BCE to the early sixth century CE.
A listed monument since 1962, the ruined castle at Hünenberg is one of the most important monuments of medieval cultural history in Canton Zug. The castle was built as early as 1100. Elaborately worked building blocks, colourfully painted exterior render and precious objects suggest that those who built it were members of the high nobility.
Between 2008 and 2012 hessenARCHÄOLOGIE uncovered a spectacular site of the later Iron Age in the northern Amöneburg Basin near Niederwald – the remains of a 21-metre-long wooden yoke-pile bridge that had served as a river crossing from around the middle of the 3rd to the middle of the 2nd century BC.
The historic centre of Constance, with its historic buildings and excellently preserved archaeological remains, has been one of the focal points of archaeological heritage preservation in the state of Baden-Württemberg since the 1980s. The town of Ladenburg looks back on a rich historical heritage: In the Roman era, Lopodunum was the capital of an extensive municipality, the civitas Ulpia Sueborum Nicrensium, and from the Carolingian period onward, Lobedtenburc is documented as the center of the Lobdengau.
Extensive excavations in Güglingen in the Zabergäu region led to the discovery of two Mithras temples in 1999 and 2002. The first one was built of stone and had been almost entirely deprived of its furnishings. The second, smaller Mithraeum, on the other hand, preserved large parts of the inventory under its collapsed tiled roof.
In 1989, the Westfälisches Museum für Archäologie conducted a study of a burial ground in Porta Westfalica-Costedt with 44 graves dating from the early Roman Imperial period. A few urn graves were discovered, but the most common forms of burial were cremation graves, cremation patch and bone nests. Such variants are common in the Rhine-Weser Germanic region.
This volume publishes the excavation report on a 10th to 13th century farmstead near Mönchengladbach-Wanlo in the administrative district of Düsseldorf. The excavation revealed a section of a typical of typical High Medieval rural settlement with loosely scattered structures in the form of ground-level post buildings and with one type of building set into the ground, accompanied by pits, two wells and a type of oven common in the Rhineland. The farmstead area, enclosed by ditches, was located on an old pathway east of the upper Niers, about halfway between the former knights' residences in Wanlo and Keyenberg to the south.
The starting point of the study is the detailed analysis of the treasure find from the Stadtweinhaus in Münster/Westphalia. With an ensemble of richly decorated jewellery, it is not only one of the largest late medieval treasure finds in Central Europe, but also a prime example for the entire source group due to its typical find and research history.
The three princely tombs of the Separatnekropole of Kleinklein show a clear chronological sequence: At the beginning is Hartnermichelkogel 1, where the founder of the Separatnekropole was buried in the last decades of the 8th century BC. The clearly younger Pommerkogel is likely to date between 660/650 and 630/620 BC. What is remarkable is that the grave furnishings are largely identical, which testifies to a fixed set of rules according to which the highest elite had to be buried in small graves over a period of 150 years. The construction of the separate necropolis thus suggests a clearly elevated position of this group of people as well as a pronounced dynastic consciousness.
Notched belt fittings served as representative and symbolic late Roman military belts; they were specially designed in Gaul for elite troops of the field army, remained in modified form until the first third of the 5th century and can be found above all at military sites and along the imperial border.
The LWL-Archaeology for Westphalia carried out its largest excavation to date from 1999 to 2002 at the Kreskenhof in Dorsten-Holsterhausen. On 120,000 square meters, five Roman encampments as well as imperial and medieval settlement traces were investigated with several thousand finds and features.
It is not only in Westphalia that the scientific study of rural building remains from the Middle Ages is a desideratum of archaeological and building history research. Deserted sites – rural settlements abandoned in the Middle Ages – are an important but often neglected factor in the development of today's cultural landscape. The publication of the decorated Arretine ceramics from the Roman encampments on the river Lippe at Oberaden and Haltern is of great interest, above all because historical events as well as dendrochronological and numismatic investigations have established the dating of the camps to the period between 11 BC and AD 9.
From 1990 to 1993, in front of the porta praetoria of the main camp in Haltern, a pottery district was discovered and archaeologically investigated, which existed at the same time as the camp. Unambiguous workshop buildings could not be identified, because the excavation section was too small.
From 1975 to 1987, the largest contiguous burial ground of the Bronze and Iron Ages (3000 to 50 B.C.) in northwestern Europe was archaeologically investigated in Warendorf-Neuwarendorf. On an area of more than eight hectares, 341 graves were uncovered, only nine were inhumations.

During the colloquium in 1994 such a period of upheaval was to be looked at more closely with the 8th century. This period, which cannot be strictly defined as a century, shows its transitional character in various respects, e.g. in political history with the striking end of the Alemannic duchy in the middle of the century and the integration of Alemannia into the Frankish Empire.
On the southern edge of the Teutoburg Forest, a settlement from the 7th and 8th centuries was archaeologically investigated in Lengerich-Hohne in 1983/84. All in all, the picture of a rural settlement from the time before the incorporation of Westphalia into the Frankish Empire is presented. Although the settlement ends with Charlemagne's Saxon wars, no causal connection can be established either on the basis of the finds or the features.

The present study analyses the available archaeological and written sources for the river systems of Main and Neckar in southern Germany. This provides a comprehensive picture of the development of river crossings. The archaeological analysis is based on the exceptional number of 121 logboat finds from the working area. In most cases, they have been parts of complex ferry constructions. This incomparable number allows the definition of local and temporal differences, sets them in contrast with finds from other European regions and gives the opportunity for reliable technical reconstructions.
While economic approaches are becoming generally more important and even mainstream topics, this is not necessarily the case for research into Pre-Roman Italy, defined as the area of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily and Sardinia during the Iron Age. Textile finds from Egypt are our most important source for research into early Byzantine clothing and furnishing textiles. The Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum owns over 200 mostly fragmentary, but also numerous complete textiles from this period.
Represented by only three examples, the so-called gold neck collars in the Eastern region are of exceptional importance in terms of craftsmanship and iconographic complexity as well as interpretive potential. As exquisite pieces of jewelry of the highest quality, the three Swedish gold neck collars are top products of their time. Attention is focused on questions concerning their manufacture, their wearers, and their purpose. Above all, the significance of the many hundreds of figural miniatures is explained, thus opening up access to the imaginary worlds of the Germanic peoples in pre-Christian times.
The Coptic monastery of Deir Anba Hadra is located opposite the southern Egyptian city of Aswan on the west bank of the Nile. This largest and best-preserved monastery in the region has been researched since 2013 by an interdisciplinary project within the framework of a DAI concession. The “economic complex” on the upper terrace was investigated in terms of construction history and archaeology as part of this project. In the evaluation, 16 construction phases were identified, which can be associated with different functions, and it is possible to identify this building complex as a site for food production. Bread, castor oil, wine and garum were produced here.

The Christianization of the Germanic peoples of Western Europe began with the conversion of Clovis, king of the Franks, who, according to the report of the historian Gregory of Tours, vowed his conversion to the Christian Catholic faith in a battle against the Alemanni in 496/97. Based on 10 helmets that came into the RGZM via the art trade, the authors investigated the circumstances of a looted excavation to a weapon find Aranda de Moncayo in Aragon in Spain.
A particularly impressive example of Romanization were the funerary monuments with which the new elites in the provinces created representative monuments for posterity. Tombs served not only to commemorate a person, but also to represent the family. The adoption or transformation of Roman status symbols by locals in the provinces is therefore a measure of Romanization. The study shows where the models came from, which social groups conveyed them, and which took them up and even developed them further.
Seaborne commerce in the Roman Empire is characterised by a remarkable efficiency for the pre-modern world. From Egypt to Britain, trade connections can be proven on the basis of archaeological finds. The range of these activities includes the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and parts of the north-eastern Atlantic.

The small group of early medieval helmets has been the subject of lively interest in archaeological research for decades. With this agreement, the close ties that have existed since the middle of the 19th century between the scientists in Mainz and the researchers of the Imperial Palace in Ingelheim were confirmed in writing.
This research examines the literary representation of Rome and its urban spaces in the two historiographical works of Tacitus. In particular, the investigation focuses on how Tacitus perceives, presents, connotes and functionalizes the city, its urban spaces and topographies which among others implies questions about thematic, symbolic, characterizing or psychologizing functions that can be identified in the text.
The Hohlenstein in the Lone Valley (Gem. Asselfingen, Alb-Donau-Kreis) is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in southern Germany. It became famous in particular for the “Lion Man”, found in 1935 – a unique mammoth ivory carving depicting a hybrid creature from the early Upper Palaeolithic period about 35,000 to 40,000 years ago. The Hohlenstein belongs to a group of caves in the Swabian Alb that have yielded the oldest known evidence of figurative art in the entire history of mankind, and for this reason became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2017.

The goal of this book has been to explore the statues of Venus. Over the centuries, they have come closer to or farther away from what real women look like. From antiquity until the 21st century, sculptors have oscillated between the ideal (and therefore insipid) beauty characterizing the goddess and the seductive shapes of the body of a living woman, which for various reasons could never fully prevail.
Recycling and reuse of sculpture was a common practice in the ancient world, which took a variety of forms in different periods and places.
The volume stresses two main aspects in relationship to this practice, namely the reuse of sculptures and their parts as building material on the one hand and in their original function or as works of art on the other hand.
Dorothee Menke Die Fundplätze von Beelen und Herzebrock-Clarholz. Schlaglichter zum frühgeschichtlichen Bestattungswesen.The pyre site in Herzebrock-Clarholz – dating to the Migration Period – is a real archaeological rarity, even beyond the region. In addition, 22 graves from the 4th and 5th century were examined here. Apparently, the burial ceremony itself was of central importance for the bereaved, because a considerable part of the grave goods and bones remained at the place of cremation and was not deposited in the graves.
Bernhard Sicherl Das merowingerzeitliche Gräberfeld von Dortmund-Asseln . Early medieval cemeteries are rare in Westphalia, even more so in the Ruhr area. Therefore, it was particularly gratifying that in Dortmund-Asseln, during a systematic excavation, fourteen female and ten male individuals could be examined in predominantly undisturbed and, by Westphalian standards, well preserved and excellently equipped inhumation graves.
Archaeological studies on migrants usually focus on their role in production activities, either as part of the labour force, or as specialized craftsmen dependent on local entrepreneurs, families or public institutions. This book aims to overcome this unidirectional discourse on dependency and to propose an alternative approach, examining migrants as actors in the economic life of ancient societies.
The panel offered archaeological landscape studies and paleoenvironmental reconstructions, thus shedding light on human-environment interactions. Archaeological research combined with Earth Sciences made different patterns of these interactions visible at several sites in Magna Graecia and Sicily.
In volume 12 of the series Daidalos – Heidelberger Abschlussarbeiten zur Klassischen Archäologie, the ceramic material excavated from eight different sites of the settlement of Mochlos is analyzed. The material, which spans all three subphases of the Old Palatial period, provides a unique opportunity to understand aspects of production, distribution, and consumption of the ceramic material and associated social dynamics.

The Alpine pastures in the Oberhasli region in the eastern Bernese Oberland have been used for centuries to summer livestock and to make cheese. The remains of dry-stone walls from derelict buildings that were left to decay are often still visible in the landscape. Some 400 newly discovered features, which were recorded during large-scale surveys in the region attest to a variety of constructions used in the Alpine economy. This publication discusses these and assesses them in the context of the regional history of Alpine economic activity.
In order to quicken the travel times between Schwedt /Oder and Prenzlau (northeastern Germany), as well as relieving the congestion in the little community of Passow, a ring road was planned. Since the project is situated in an extremely favorable topographical settlement area, all ground operations were placed under cultural heritage orders.

Volume 46 of the series Schweizer Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte und Archäologie des Mittelalters presents the result of the excavations in Altreu in the canton of Solothurn. All the elements of a medieval town, such as the town fortifications, the town castle and the residential buildings facing the alley, have been coherently demonstrated. After a fire catastrophe in the second half of the 14th century, the small town was abandoned and fell into oblivion. Therefore, the traces are preserved and handed down with numerous findings.
For centuries, the town of Biberach preserved its largely undisturbed town centre with a considerable number of late medieval buildings. This volume presents the results of two excavations at very different locations within the medieval urban structure. The analysis of the excavation on Viehmarktplatz focuses on questions of the beginning of the settlement and the development on its periphery, and thus on the first town fortifications.
The essays in the 4th volume of Archaeology and Economy in the Ancient World – Proceedings of the 19th International Congress of Classical Archaeology, Cologne/Bonn 2018 focus on the interrelationship between riverine landscapes and the economic habits of their inhabitants. The case studies cover a broad temporal as well as geographical spectrum and discuss phenomena such as geomorphic and anthropogenic changes in rivers, the role of rivers as transport and trade routes, and their impact on settlement patterns.
Volume 40 of the series Schweizer Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte und Archäologie des Mittelalters has as its theme the ruins of the castle complex of Marmels (municipality of Marmorera in the Oberhalbstein/Sursés valley, canton of Graubünden), situated about a hundred meters above the Marmorera reservoir. The castle belonged in the high and late Middle Ages to the Lords of Marmels, ministerials of the Bishop of Chur. Extensive restoration of the castle ruins in 1987 and 1988 enabled the Archaeological Service of the Grisons to carry out architectural-historical investigations on the preserved building remains and excavations on the site, and to present the results in the present volume.
The monograph deals with the Hallstatt cemetery of Immendingen-Mauenheim (district of Tuttlingen), which comprises 23 burial mounds and at least 10 small cremation graves between the mounds, and with the necropolis of Engen-Bargen (district of Constance), which consists of five tumuli.

The aim of this study is to gain information about changes in the social organization of the population of Europe in the period between 15000 B.C. and 5000 B.C. by means of the development of house building and the spatial organization of dwelling places. This period was characterized by drastic environmental changes, which caused the hunter-gatherer groups to adapt not only their subsistence strategy and mobility, but possibly also the size of their groups, each of which formed house and probably also economic communities.

This volume presents new ideas, methods and ways of thinking gathered during the time at the Graduate School, as well as research conducted or current projects. The range of topics in this issue reflects the multifaceted nature for which the Graduate School in Munich was known. The topic of the international workshop “Excavating the Extra-Ordinary. Challenges and merits of workings with small finds” was the challenging task of working with seemingly ‘ordinary’ small objects and their processing. On this occasion in April 2019 at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, experts from Egyptological excavations, museums and institutions presented and discussed current issues.

Representation, Production and Use of Light in Ancient Spaces,Ancient authors and archaeological sources provide evicence for the central role of the light in the ancient life and thought. The analysis of this argument through an ideal dialogue with the contemporary lighting culture contributes to point out new and different research areas.
On the Katzenberg near Mayen, a military fortification, one of the largest of its kind, existed from about 300 AD until the middle of the 5th century to protect the economic centre of Mayen. Based on the results obtained there, 143 other hill fortifications in northern Gaul are examined.
The contributions to the panel aim to explore ancient construction, working practices, and the transmission of technical expertise by skilled workers. Quarry marks and stonemason's marks are two aspects of the implementation of the construction plan and the organizational processes within the building procedures. They represent guidelines that were used to design a building and position stone and marble elements. These processes and thoughts on the interconnection of the workshops are the basis for discussion in the volume.
The presentations of the panel "Local styles or common pattern books in Roman mural painting and mosaics" illustrated various aspects of the working methods of ancient workshops and their production.
Pupils of non-German origin are taking part in Latin lessons in increasing numbers. While the promotion of German language competence in native speakers is one of the traditional topoi of subject justification, this does not apply to second language learners. International experience, however, gives indications of remarkable potentials of Latin teaching for the development of second language competence.

The Catholic parish church of St. Vitus in the Schmiechen district, town of Schelklingen (Alb-Donau district), in its current appearance is a mixture of different eras, from Gothic to modern. Archaeological investigations carried out in the course of a redesign and extension in 1990 and 1992 revealed a number of predecessor buildings, the earliest of which can be dated to the 9th century.

Since the original of the "Tropaeum Traiani von Adamklissi" is located in Romania and the copy in Heidelberg, it was received and politically instrumentalized very differently in the course of the 20th century, depending on its location. These two stories are the subject of this volume and the accompanying pop-up exhibition.
Volume 7 of the series Research and Reports on Archaeology in Baden-Württemberg, published by the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege im Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart, contains a catalog of the features and finds of the Roman cemetery excavated from 1979 to 1981 at Stettfeld (municipality of Ubstadt-Weiher, district of Karlsruhe).
Two Roman villas on the northern edge of the Mayen mill quarries were investigated with geophysical measurements, excavations, geoarchaeological and botanical surveys, and their surroundings were explored. The resulting findings should clarify how the numerous workers with their families, who settled in the area between Mayen on the edge of the Eifel and Andernach on the Rhine from the beginning of the Roman imperial period, could have been fed.
A report on studies conducted by the author from 2015 to 2018 as part of the project "The Development of the Early Neolithic Societies in Lower Egypt in the 5th Millennium BC and their Interactions with the Southern Levant". A major focus is the research on origins of Neolithic pottery in Lower Egypt.
From 1989 to 1992, large-scale excavations took place in the area of the market site in Konstanz on Bodensee. The site was characterized by an extraordinary density of features and large quantities of find material. The features and finds are evaluated in detail in the present volume and allow insights into the urban development in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Martin Bentz, Eleni Hasaki (Hrsg.) Reconstructing Scales of Production in the Ancient Greek World: Producers, Processes, Products, People. Researchers have pursued different approaches, both traditional and experimental, to determine the scale of artisanal production, an important basis for statements about the ancient economy. This panel will present new methods of calculation: on the size of workshops and their workforces, on the time required for the entire process of manufacturing products, on the amount needed or demanded by the population for certain products, and on the proportion of ancient production volumes preserved today.

This volume summarizes and compares town-country relations in two civitates: the civitas Cugernorum with its capital Colonia Ulpia Traiana and the civitas Batavorum with its capital Municipium Ulpia Noviomagus.
Volume 18 of the series Forschungsberichte des Landesmuseums für Vorgeschichte Halle, published by the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt has been put online as the first volume of the series in Propylaeum-eBOOKS. Various early farming cultures populated the Middle Elbe-Saale region between 4200 and 2800 BC. Animal bones from two crucial sites, Wallendorf "Hutberg" and Salzmünde "Schiepzig", were analyzed and compared with faunal remains from 29 other pertinent published sites to demonstrate the cultural diversity involved in the development of animal use. In total, more than 33,000 animal remains were statistically evaluated using archaeozoological methods. The results show that food production was mainly based on cattle breeding and that certain sites showed evidence of specialization in the animal species and animal products used. Moreover, symbolic practices demonstrate that communities showed a particular appreciation of specific animals, who thus had a unique relationship with people.
Volume 13 of the series Kleine Schriften des Ägyptischen Museums Leipzig edited by Dietrich Raue, has been put online as the first volume of the series in Propylaeum-eBOOKS. The "Special Exhibition at the Egyptian Museum - Georg Steindorff - of the University of Leipzig" in August 2020, during which the current excavation results of the Egyptian-German joint project at the Temple of Heliopolis were presented, was the occasion for their presentation in the freshly published volume.
Volume 42 of the series RGZM – Tagungen, published by the Römisch Germanisches Zentralmuseum, has been put online at the same time as the print version is published. The publication is based on a series of international conferences of the Leibniz Research Network on Historical Authenticity, which took place at the Roman Germanic Central Museum in Mainz and at the University of Cambridge between 2016 and 2019.
In Hemmingen, 15 km northwest of Stuttgart, the region's fertile loess soils have been used for agriculture since the beginning of the Neolithic Age and throughout all subsequent epochs. The numerous finds from all cultures from the first farmers, the Celts, Romans and Alamanni are evidence of the settlement history in and around Hemmingen. The present volume, published in the series Archäologische Informationen aus Baden-Württemberg, offers a summarizing overview of the ground monuments and finds of the most important epochs of Hemmingen's pre- and early history.
In the 17th volume of the Archaeology and Economy in the Ancient World – Proceedings of the 19th International Congress of Classical Archaeology, Cologne/Bonn 2018, the large villas of the Roman upper class as well as rural businesses, which shaped the landscape at the time of the Roman Republic and the Empire, form the main topic. This work presents a detailed and documented list of Turkish loanwords found in Greek as spoken in Crete, from the time of the Cretan War (1645-1669) until today. The material presented comes from dictionaries, texts, and oral speech, with entries amounting to a total number of 4000 approximately. It includes words that come directly from Turkish, but also those that followed, through derivation or composition. This corpus is a solid basis for the study of the impact of the Turkish language on the Cretan idiom and the Greek language in general. The first edition of this work was published by the Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion (Crete, Greece) in 2014.
Volume 14 of the Archaeology and Economy in the Ancient World – Proceedings of the 19th International Congress of Classical Archaeology, Cologne/Bonn 2018 contains the quarry and mining district near Mayen in the Eastern Eifel, the starting point for the production of millstones, ceramics etc., which were exported to large parts of Europe for many centuries. The 11th. volume of the series Daidalos – Heidelberger Abschlussarbeiten zur Klassischen Archäologie concentrates on the applicability of interdisciplinary theoretical models within Classical Archaeology. It starts off with an analysis of the term “science” and its evolution in order to extrapolate essential technical terms such as inter-, trans- and multidisciplinarity. This is followed by an overview of the history, methods and theories of Classical Archaeology. Since this discipline has often been criticized for a lack of interdisciplinary theories, the author compares the conception of Classical Archaeology with the modus operandi of Pre- and Protohistory, which in turn features a large spectrum of – at times contradictory – schools of thought. To this end, different theories from Pre- and Protohistory are selected and introduced.
The authors of "The Economics of Urbanism in the Roman East" look at the geography of the cities of the Eastern Mediterranean under Roman rule. Their aim is to understand the ancient city in socio-economic terms, presenting the latest statistical data on the phenomenon of the city in the Roman East. Grotte des Pigeons or Taforalt Cave in Morocco is one of the most famous cave sites in North Africa. The new volume of the monographs of the RGZM presents new finds of the hunters and gatherers of Iberomaurusia from 23000 to 12500 years ago, which were exposed to a rapidly changing climate. The cave finds provide insights into environmental and behavioural changes of their former inhabitants.
The Dynameron of Nikolaos Myrepsos is a text fundamental to the Byzantine and early modern history of medicine and pharmacy, which was and is known from its Latin translation and contributed with its recipes to the creation of the first occidental pharmacy manuals, the well-known Pharmacopoeia. Ilias Valiakos already presented his critical edition of Dynameron in 2019. Now the second edition follows with an English introduction.
In May 2018, under the title Archaeology and Economy in the Ancient World, the participants of the 19th International Congress of Classical Archaeology dealt in more than 900 individual contributions with a wide variety of questions concerning ancient economic history. Panel 5.16 offers an overview of the state of research on the region of Cilicia, with a focus on interdisciplinary studies on production exchange, trade and transport in the Mediterranean region. Due to its special geographical location at the crossroads of the most important sea and land trade routes, at a transition and connection point between Syria, Cyprus and Egypt, Cilicia played an important role in the context of cultural, social and economic exchange in the Mediterranean region.
In recent years, the study of ancient construction has focused increasingly on putting the different aspects of the process of building into an economic framework. Öhringen around 200 AD: Several hundred soldiers in two forts guard the nearby Limes. Their families, traders and craftsmen live around the military camps. The settlement vicus Aurelianus is an important post of the Roman Empire on the border to the Germanic tribes. As early as the 18th century, antiquity researchers recognised the importance of the site. This volume of the series Archäologische Informationen aus Baden-Württemberg presented the Limes World Heritage Site and especially the rich Roman heritage in Öhringen to a broad public and also shows that archaeological research has lost none of its fascination to this day.
The historical development of old-language teaching in the Federal Republic of Germany is comprehensively presented for the first time in this newly published volume. By systematically taking stock of and analyzing the didactic and methodological guidelines of this epoch, the work closes a gap in research on the history of old-language teaching in Germany and at the same time lays a solid foundation for the discussion of future justification, form and further development of the school subjects Latin and Greek.

In 1994, archaeologists in the open-cast lignite mine near Schöningen encountered a scientific sensation: finds and findings pointed to Stone Age hunters who had hunted wild horses here on a lakeside about 300,000 years ago. After the first volume of the series "Forschungen zur Urgeschichte aus dem Tagebau Schöningen" provided a chronological classification of the site, the current volume is about geology.
The laying of the gas pipeline from Forchheim to Finsing in Bavaria in the years 2017-18 brought to light a section of a Bronze Age settlement in the Danube floodplain. The present excavation report describes the excavation methods comprehensively and asks the question about the character of the finds: ritual or profane?
The newly published volume is dedicated to the 'main church' of al-Andarin, the investigation of which was started in 2010 with a research project of the University of Heidelberg. Although only one excavation campaign could be undertaken because of the Syrian war, first results are available on the typological classification of the 'main church' in the early Byzantine church building of Syria as well as the consideration of the ensemble in its urbanistic context. Finally, in a contribution by N. Viermann some inscriptions newly discovered in 2010 are published and the state of research on the Greek epigraphy of al-Andarin is summarized.

The territories of the Adriatic and the Ionian area were separated from each other both from a political and a cultural point of view. Because of this circumstance, they represent a suitable area for the study of commercial and cultural exchange. Lucian of Samosata's treatise „Wie man Geschichte schreiben soll“ about historiography and its rules is an important source for the study of ancient historiography. Isidor Brodersen, however, regarded the treatise as part of Lucian's literary game and explores the question of whether the latter, who is known primarily as an author of humorous works and satires, actually had the primary goal of teaching in historiography.

In the current volume of the Archaeological Reports, Dietrich Klaus Hartmann evaluates the archaeological investigations of the former parish church of St. Georgen in Burladingen on the Zollernalb, which were already carried out in 1982. The unusually large number of finds can be dated to the 8th century and tell of a number of predecessor buildings. St. George in Burladingen is an important piece in the mosaic for the research of rural churches in south-eastern Baden-Württemberg.
The newly published volume from the series "Byzantium between Orient and Occident" comprises 13 papers from the conference »New Research on Late Byzantine Goldsmiths‘ Works (13th-15thCenturies)«, held at the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz in October 2015. The contributions primarily deal with the material culture of goldsmiths’ works, such as crosses, reliquary caskets, jewellery, enamel works, and precious stones, spanning the wide geographical area of Byzantium and many of its neighbours, from Russia via Trebizond and Serbia to Crete. Furthermore, written sources on Byzantine goldsmiths, their craft and the provenance of precious metals provide evidence for goldsmithing in Byzantium throughout its history.
Adaptation as a strategy for success: Numerous archaeological finds from the Palaeolithic to the Mesolithic, which can be found in the shore regions of inland lakes, tell of the everyday life of the people who lived there. The conditions in these wetlands favour the transmission of organic and botanical remains. Thus, these regions are today an exceptional archive for a detailed analysis of human adaptability in changing, dynamic environments.
Cultural misunderstandings are on the one hand a basic condition of intercultural communication, but on the other hand they can also be understood as a result of interculturality. There are both unreflected and provoked or politically exploited misunderstandings, as well as misunderstandings of research, which sometimes prematurely confirms a misunderstanding where logic and context are not immediately apparent. Such misunderstandings determined the political-cultural relationship between Byzantium, the Latin West and the Slavic world, which are examined in the newly published volume from the series "Byzantium between Orient and Occident".
Narrativity as a concept of science is widespread - even beyond literary studies. In spite of its extensive pictorial sources, ancient Egypt has so far been largely unused. Does the erotic poetry of Horace have anything to do with the rigid return to traditional values using strict moral ideals during the principle of Augustus? The recently published dissertation by Eva Maria Mateo Decabo asks about the politicity of 'small' forms in Augustan times and suggests a third way of analysis beyond common research approaches.
The western sacred art of the Middle Ages presents a rich, cross-genre repertoire of images of Adam and Eve stories. In Eastern Church monumental painting the subject only found its way into the picture programs of the churches in the post-Byzantine period. All the more remarkable is the innovative genesis of Adam and Eve cycles in Venetian-dominated Crete in the 14th and 15th centuries, which are reconstructed and analyzed in this newly published volume from the series "Byzantium between Orient and Occident".
A newly published conference volume deals with the empire of the Persian Sasanids (AD 224-651), which spanned areas of today's Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Many elements of Sasanian art and culture can be found in neighboring countries such as Byzantium or the Christian Caucasus and lived on in the Islamic territories after their demise. The articles deal with the continuing role of the Sasanian Persians and their culture.
The newly published dissertation by Heinz Sperling was created in the research context of "Archeology of premodern economies". It succeeds in determining the production conditions of a Roman brick factory in the northwestern provinces by using open source models. This makes it possible to make quantitative statements about the maximum production capacity, the personnel and fuel requirements and the transport costs of such antique systems. Application example is the Roman brick factory in Dormagen.
Piety is not the only driving force for the development of Christian pilgrimage. In a broad chronological and spatial perspective, the book deals with the economic relationships that affected Byzantine pilgrimage (5th-12th centuries). The book illuminates the Byzantine pilgrimage shrines, examines their genesis, but also their organizational and financing structure, which was already framed by laws in late antiquity.
The center of the Roman city of Lopodunum was dominated by a complex of forum and basilica, which was characterized by an enormous area and large expansions. Except for the remains of the foundations, only a little of the buildings remained in the medieval core of today's city of Ladenburg. This newly published book explains the considerations that led to the virtual 3D reconstruction of the ancient forum, as it is presented today in the Lobdengau Museum in Ladenburg. In addition to the presentation of the reconstruction approaches, perspectives for the further scientific study of the historically important Roman building complex are shown.
This book deals with the architectural heritage built by non-Muslim Anatolian communities that has long been neglected and abandoned and is now heavily ruined and open to vandalism.
It is a product of research missions in the provinces of Adana, Bursa, Elazığ, İzmir, Kayseri and Niğde that were carried out by the Association for the Protection of Cultural Heritage between 2015 and 16.
The buildings were analyzed according to their architectural history, style, plan and construction techniques. Their current status and risk factors including structural and material problems have been identified. In line with their context, recommendations for their conservation and future use were developed.

The Heidengraben on the Swabian Alb contains the remains of a fortified late Celtic large settlement of the 2nd and 1st century BC. The Celtic oppidum is one of the largest in Central Europe. In autumn 2013, an international colloquium dealt with questions of the reconstruction of archaeological findings for the touristic enhancement of the monument and presented numerous "best practice" projects in Germany and Austria.
The Michaelskapelle is located at the edge of the late medieval small town of Gammertingen. It is a remnant of an aristocratic seat of the 10th-12th century, whose roots go back to the Merovingian period. The interdisciplinary analysis of the archaeological excavations in the chapel offers an unusually dense insight into the origin and development of a medieval dynastic seat and at the same time an indication of the role that local tradition may have played in the early days of aristocratic genesis.

The writing De civitate Dei by the religious philosopher and church father Augustine, written in the years 413-426, combines in many ways state and social theory, individual ethics and historical theology. Ancient philosophy is rethought from a Christian perspective. The Roman Terra Sigillata was produced with sophisticated technology in large manufactories. The red engobed fine ceramics were marketed throughout the entire Roman Empire. The complex forms of organisation in the production centres and the distribution network had hardly been researched before. This book discusses the social and work organisation structures within the production centres from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD.
Volume 32 of the series Archäologische Berichte, published by the der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Ur- und Frühgeschichte, deals with the east of the former diocese of Constance (ca. 585 to 1821). This region is still largely rural with a rich church landscape dating back to the early Middle Ages. In the course of the last decades, archaeological investigations have been carried out on many of these churches, the results of which, however, have not yet been generally available. The evaluation compares in detail the different conditions under which the churches were built.
In her dissertation, Melissa Vetters presents a comprehensive and detailed investigation of Mycenaean terracotta figurines from the period ca. 1450/1430-1070/1060 BC. The corpus comprises over 3200 catalogued individual fragments and thus forms a material basis for a context analysis of the distribution of figures. The text and image parts are also available as print copies in bookshops, the catalogue is only available online for download. The publication was supported by the Institute for Aegean Prehistory.

As the first publication in the series Monographien des RGZM, the four-volume work (Bd.122.1-4) "Das kaiserzeitliche Gräberfeld von Halbturn, Burgenland", published by Nives Doneus, has been published by the Propylaeum eBOOKS. The Roman gravesite Halbturn I was completely investigated by systematic excavations. On the basis of the find material, the variability of the grave use was demonstrated, which can be determined by the positioning of the burials and burials and the different design of the graves. The grave goods also provide important insights into the life of that time.
The second volume of Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident was released for the second time at the Proylaeum-eBOOKS after 2016. The tenth volume of the series Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident is now also available for download at the Propylaeum-eBOOKS in Open Access. In the proceedings of the international final conference of the project »Für Seelenheil und Lebensglück. Das byzantinische Pilgerwesen und seine Wurzeln« in December 2015 in Mainz, where scholars of archeology, Byzantine, art history, history, religious history, epigraphy and historical geography focused on understanding the connections between Byzantine pilgrimage and pagan and Jewish pilgrimage related contributions published.
The first volume of the series Bodenaltertümer Westfalens , published by Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe, is online. The "Bodenaltertümer Westfalens" will be successively retro-digitized and put online. Perspectively, newly published volumes will appear in parallel in print and in the Propylaeum-eBOOKS. In the series, which appears at irregular intervals, research results of the Westphalian Bodensekmalpflege are published in the form of monographs or anthologies. All epochs are treated from the Paleolithic to the early Middle Ages.

The monastery was a Christian center in medieval Europe and the commemorative books are unique documents of the social, political and ecclesiastical life of that time, which are comprehensively and in this volume appreciated for their importance for the history of Western monasticism.
The third volume of the series Forschungen und Berichte zur Archäologie in Baden-Württemberg presents the antlers of the Magdalene Station Petersfels (Lkr. Konstanz). In the investigation, Pfeifer shows that both discharge poles and pieces that are just like a skull were introduced, stored and processed on Petersfels.>
As the first volume of the series Forschungen und Berichte zur Archäologie in Baden-Württemberg , the dissertation by Lars Blöck is now available for download in Open Access. Blöck examines the Roman settlement in the southernmost section of the right Oberrheingebiets between Kaiserstuhl, Black Forest and draining into the Upper Rhine Alb. The study is based on 750 Roman sites in this area, cataloged and evaluated.

"Das Dynameron des Nikolas Myrepsos", which was critically edited by Ilias Valiakos for the first time in eight centuries, is a collection of 2667 prescriptions for all kinds of medicines and has a long tradition of pharmaceutical manuals. The prescriptions for medicines go back to the 1st century AD.
Supplement 10 of the Corpus der minoischen und mykenischen Siegel is now available for download in Open Access. Artemis Karnavas supplement "Seals, seals and seal impressions from Akrotiri in Thera" presents the seals, seal impressions and sealed objects from the Bronze Age Akrotiri on Thera for the first time scientifically. First, the sites in their archaeological context are considered and then the seals and seal seals are presented according to typological and iconographic aspects. One of the results of the investigation is that most of these objects came from Crete and were imported from there to Akrotiri.

The contributions in the volumes highlight the varied and variable relationships between the Latin West and the Byzantine Empire. The volumes are structured according to the media of communication. Consequently, the thematic themes of works of art, pictorial concepts and places are the focus of discussion in Volume 9.1.
Volume 1 of the series Forschungen zur Urgeschichte aus dem Tagebau Schöningen , published by the Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseum in Mainz, the Niedersächsischen Landesamt für Denkmalpflege in Hanover and the Römisch-Germanischen Kommission des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in Frankfurt, presents the results of the study Middle Pleistocene at de 1994 in brown coal opencast mine near Schöningen discovered hunting ground ago. Another aspect deals with the temporal classification of the finds made there. The other volumes in the series will be uploaded to Propylaeum eBOOKS on a sukessive basis.
Volume 20 der Reihe Archäologie und Geschichte, deals with the excavations at Birkenberg near Freiburg i. Br. The excavations brought to light the remains of a medieval castle. This, as well as the records, confirmed the long-held assumptions that there was a connection between the castles and the nearby tunnels for silver mining in the southern Black Forest in the Middle Ages, during which the lords of the castle supervised the extraction of the ores and their preparation.
In volume 6 of the series Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident the authors of the interdisciplinary conference from the 17th -18th November 2011 in Mainz, discuss the relationship of man to environment during the Byzantine millennium (395-1453 AD).

Freiburger Forschungen zum ersten Jahrtausend in Südwestdeutschlandtreats the history, the architectural history and the excavation findings to Reichenau Monastery. The author himself was involved in the excavations for years. In addition to the findings on the history of architecture, the everyday life of an early medieval monastic community is illuminated.

The series is edited by the Thorbecke-Verlag publishing house. The volumes are first published in print and are then made publicly available on the internet after two years.
