“Almost Everything is Made of Quarks” tells the story of a physicist who dedicates his ideals, his intellect and his curiosity to the people he meets. He satisfies his thirst for knowledge through research. On his travels he discovers that life and feelings cannot be planned. After studying in the USA, he spent his years working in Denmark, France and Switzerland before becoming a professor in Germany. His memories allow us to experience the history of physics, in which the colorful science of quarks, atomic nuclei and particles unfolds.

This work is a scientific analysis of the operational experience of COVID-19 disaster relief in Heidelberg, Germany, between 2020 and 2022. Civil-military cooperation during the pandemic has made valuable contributions to strengthening the resilience of society as a whole – probably at a high price. The mitigation potential can be limited for all stakeholders if a healthcare system is already overloaded in routine operations. In the future, it will be important to reduce bureaucracy, to break the ‘panic-then-forget’ cycle through sustainable, holistic disaster preparation, to establish timely operational readiness, and to master the “infodemic” in a world of social media.

This volume presents the Latin legal manuscripts of the Bibliotheca Palatina, most of which are now in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. This collection has special value due to the manuscripts from Romanic countries it contains, which document the rediscovery and annotation of late antique legal writings and the systematisation of ecclesiastical law collections that shaped Europe from the High Middle Ages onwards. Other codices show close-ups of local practices and interests, for example in the form of codes of procedure, sample forms or personal text collections. The manuscripts cover the 9th to 16th centuries, but have their focus in the 13th to 15th centuries.

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has challenged peace ethicists to respond to the new political realities. While some call for a fundamental rethink of the previous normative basic positions of Protestant peace ethics, others continue to adhere to the cornerstones of the concept of just peace. In the light of the war in Ukraine, the authors of this volume shed light on current controversies in peace ethics and discuss necessary realignments. This includes questions of the peace order as a legal order, law-preserving violence and civil conflict management.

Research, especially in light of the digital transformation, needs a coordinated environment. The E-Science-Tage 2023 offered those responsible for and interested in research data management the opportunity to network and exchange on the latest developments. With the theme "Empower Your Research – Preserve Your Data", the focus was on the sustainable storage and the interdisciplinary and international availability of research data. Within this framework, the importance, risks and benefits of transparent provision and accessibility of research data were addressed. This conference proceeding book is a collection of talks and posters on these topics.

Worship services online, pastoral care via Instagram, Facebook churches, and religious influencers on YouTube – the phenomena of digital church and digital theology are diverse and have been growing rapidly since the pandemic, in the German-speaking world and elsewhere. This volume aims to serve as a map in this field: it maps debates around the German conceptualizations of ‘digital church’ and ‘digital theology’ and thus serves as an introduction to and overview of the rapidly growing field of debate and research since 2020.

Art history teaching is unimaginable without pictures. Whereas reproductions on paper were passed through the rows of the audience in the 19th century, from around 1900 onwards diapositives on screens or walls made it possible for all viewers simultaneously to look at the pictures displayed. In art history, the parallel use of two projectors became common: comparative viewing was established as a central teaching method.

As part of a class at the Institute for European Art History (winter term 2022/23, led by Dr Alexandra Vinzenz), students studied the imaging devices in the institute's own collection. From the epidiascope to slide projectors from the 1910s onwards and to the 16mm film projector, a representative cross-section is shown in the exhibition and in this catalogue. 

In its first resolution, the United Nations General Assembly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine by a clear majority just a few days after the war began and called on Moscow to end its aggression. What at first glance looks like a worldwide condemnation of the Russian war does not stand up to a differentiated view. A closer look shows that it is not the international community of states that disapproves of the Russian aggression, but primarily the West. The volume focuses on the positions of the BRICS states, the MENA region, the post-Soviet space, and various regional organizations.

One of the main questions of philosophy of science is the problem of the status of scientific knowledge as epistemically justified. In this book recent debates about the justification problem and related consequences are re-accessed from a perspective of empirical evidence and epistemic praxis. However severe, debates between realism, empiricism, and relativism in the twentieth and early twenty-first century point to a synthetic solution of the justification problem. This way of argumentation is already presented by John Dewey’s pragmatism but has been ignored in most debates of the past decades. Here, Dewey’s pragmatic stance is used to formulate a synthetic solution of the justification problem based on recent debates.

Germany and the USA 1871–2021 is the first comprehensive look at 150 years of German-American relations. It traces this dramatic story in all its complexity from the founding of the German nation state in 1871 to World War I, the Weimar Republic, Hitler and Nazi Germany, the Cold War and its demise, and the revolution of 9/11. The book also scrutinizes the presidencies of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump on one side of the Atlantic, as well as the tenure of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the other side.

This book comprises earlier publications of the author and closes with a new chapter on “Obama, Trump, the decline of an imperial democracy and American-German relations 2009–2021.”

Based on six scenarios sketching various forms and ways of a possible end to the war in Ukraine, this volume examines the chances and risks connected with them. The authors discuss questions related to military victory, defeat and a negotiated settlement, approaching the various scenarios from the perspectives of international law, peace ethics, and legal ethics. Moreover, the volume focuses on the societal dimension of the war, covering Russian civil society, the role of the churches in the war zone and peace policy questions related to possible future rapprochement and reconciliation.

In social, political and media debates, "artificial intelligence" is described as a savior, extension or threat to humans. These descriptions construct social imaginations that frame individual and societal discourse about AI. The volume combines case studies of these frames, narratives and metaphors with a reflection on the associated ethical questions under the task of imagination-sensitive ethics. It thus offers the first interdisciplinary introduction to the imagination of artificial intelligence from media studies, communication studies, linguistics, film studies and media ethics.

The body has a history: this realization constitutes the starting point for a history of the body, with several related approaches emerging in the 1970s in various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The scientific, literary, aesthetic and simply discursive everyday processing of this re-experience, a "collective trauma," will take time. Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine poses the biggest threat to peace in Europe since the end of World War II. Moreover, the armed invasion on February 24, 2022 marks a turning point for the European peace and security system: Putin aims not only to extend his influence in eastern Europe but also to establish a new world order. The authors of this edited volume examine the background of the war in Ukraine and the constellation of conflict parties. Furthermore, they analyze positions based on ethics of peace as well as those of the church, and highlight Western reactions to the war.

By sharing research data, scientists can benefit on all fronts: existing data sets can be reused and scientific progress can become more efficient. Data exchange creates more transparency, makes collaborations efficient and can be viewed as a quality assurance measure.

Throughout the E-Science-Tage 2021, the importance, risks and benefits of sharing research data was addressed. This conference proceeding book is a collection of presentations and posters on “Share Your Research data”.

How are medieval books transmitted with pictures and text and how do these change in the course of copying processes? This book explores this question and examines the transmission of pictures of the 'Welsche Gast' from an art historical perspective with the help of philological approaches. The 'Welsche Gast' is a Middle High German didactic poem written in 1215/1216 by the Italian cleric Thomasin von Zerklaere. Today, 24 copies of the manuscript have been preserved and large parts of them have been illuminated with a picture cycle. This book analyses the structure and genesis of the picture cycle as well as the changes within the 250-year transmission.

Banksy is one of the most famous artists today. The origins of his preferred technique, stencil graffiti, have so far remained largely unexplored. “Stencil Stories” tells their story. Beginning in 1870, a line is drawn from stencils for use, through propaganda and resistance stencils before 1945, protest stencils from May 1968, Pop Art and Conceptual Art stencils, from punk stencils and pochoirists to street art stencils and Banksy. Featuring Blek Le Rat, John Fekner, David Wojnarowicz, Vhils, Alex Vallauri, C215, Banksy or punk bands like CRASS and The Clash. Students from the university and the PH Heidelberg contributed texts.

This book explores the development of credit markets to mobilize large amounts of capital in the medieval and early modern period. The everyday financial dealings of craftsmen, farmers and townsmen actually represent the credit transactions of almost the entire historical population and are therefore of special importance. The studies presented in this book focus on the small-scale credit dealings in different regions (England, Wales, Tirol, Northern Italy, Germany, Low Countries). The contributions in the book discuss how the financial needs of the people involved, and the transformation of institutions during the Middle Ages and early modern period, affected access to capital markets and the practice of money lending.

In the early modern period, Europe's view of the world's religions oscillated between attraction and repulsion, between fear of the unknown and simultaneous fascination. In addition to the conflicts over the various inner-European faiths, the confrontation with foreign religions became increasingly important from the 16th century onward: These were not only to be found in Asia, Africa and America, but also in the past of the Old World. The broadening of the European view in geographical as well as chronological terms led at the same time to a deepened consciousness of the identity of one's own culture and its historical conditions. From the beginning, images, mostly book illustrations, played a central role in the formation of these ideas alongside texts. The present volume presents the most effective graphic imprints, the most important texts and traditions on pagan beliefs, gods and cults against the background of the religious, historical-antiquarian and ethnographic interests of the early modern period and illuminates the functions of images and texts on foreign religions for a cultural comparison between science, fiction and polemics.

Based on a symposium, the volume discusses in various contributions the relationship between music and puppet theatre, which has a long and varied history. On the one hand, it focuses on the performance of opera with puppets in the 18th century and musicalised puppet theatre in the middle of the 20th century; on the other hand, the volume takes a look at the integration of puppet themes in the subject, aesthetics and staging of opera with real singers. This focus is complemented by a historical tour of the relationship between puppets and music and a look at the institutionalisation of puppetry in international organisations, using UNIMA and UNESCO as examples.

New Technologies - new Ethics? The volume, produced in interdisciplinary research at FEST, discusses what is "new" in and through digital technologies in different fields of science and society: What is truly new? Do novel objects, tools, forms of perception, means of cognition, questions, actors, and/or forms of communication emerge? Is something "new" recognizable or do existing questions continue in other medial forms?

The contributions are linked to one another by lines of arguments and fields, which - similar to hashtags - weave together individual statements into threads and thus enable mapping the debate around different concepts or phenomena. Throughout the volume, one can follow these threads:

The year 2021 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Elisabeth Augusta of the Palatinate (1721–1794). As the eldest granddaughter of Elector Carl Philipp, she was married to the heir to the electoral dignity, Carl Theodor, on her 21st birthday in Mannheim Castle. Her younger sister, Maria Anna, was married on the same day to Clemens Franz von Paula, Duke of Bavaria. Elisabeth Augusta and Clemens Franz had fallen in love with each other in the run-up to the marriages and maintained a close, intimate and also erotic relationship for many years. Their correspondence reflects their close relationship, their duties and limits, their boredom and hopes, their occasional weariness with court life and their understanding of their princely role. It is not an exchange of scholarly content or serious commentary on political developments, but a glimpse into the prince's everyday life, a piece of normality. Nevertheless, it is precisely this that appears all the more exciting, as the private scope of action of princely persons and the hidden language of love and passions are also revealed here.   

The book deals with the still unresolved questions of therapist selection, psychosomatic-psychotherapeutic/psychiatric diagnostics, indication and differential indication with regard to various psychotherapeutic procedures, assessment of disease severity and prognostic prospects under the naturalistic conditions of psychotherapeutic practice within the framework of guideline psychotherapy. The book particularly touches the interests of medical and psychological psychotherapists. The linkage of psychotherapeutic practice and research involves the question of the nature and extent of quality assurance in this field.

La destruction est un angle de vue capable d'englober un grand nombre d'auteurs et de compositeurs différents. Ce travail propose de rechercher les répétitions au cours de l'histoire littéraire, de trouver les moments de continuité ou de rupture. Le dénominateur commun du caractère destructeur sert à détecter une facette du style de l'époque. L'intérêt de contempler plusieurs domaines dans l'art des mouvements d'avant-garde réside dans la pratique artistique qui connaît de plus en plus d'échanges et de synergies entre les différents domaines ; les formes d'expression s'entre-influencent, s'entrechoquent et communiquent. L'ouverture des genres et des frontières linguistiques, pour les études comparatives, rend cette démarche d'autant plus indispensable : cela implique l'étude des grands travaux qui unissent toutes les formes d'expression. Il est donc souhaitable que l'on puisse comprendre et visualiser les réciprocités entre la littérature, la musique et la performance. Le slogan captivant du caractère destructeur synthétise une base créative de l'art d'avant-garde et touche à son paradoxe inévitable : la destruction implique en effet des aspects créatifs ; l'espace libéré sera rempli aussitôt.

Destruction is a perspective that encompasses a large number of different authors and composers. This work seeks patterns of repetition throughout literary history, to find moments of continuity or rupture. The common denominator of destructiveness is used to detect a facet of the style of the time. The interest in contemplating several fields in the art of avant-garde movements lies in artistic practice, which is experiencing more and more exchanges and synergies between the different fields of literature, music and performance; forms of expression influence each other, clash and communicate. The opening up of genres and linguistic borders for comparative studies makes this approach all the more essential: this necessitates the study of the major works that unite all forms of expression. It is therefore desirable to be able to understand and visualize the reciprocity between the above fields. The captivating slogan of destructive character synthesises a creative basis of avant-garde art and touches upon its inevitable paradox: destruction actually implies creative aspects; the space freed up is immediately filled again.

“Fellow students – the wind of pestilence that is the Jewish Rule is blowing against you!” – These words formed the headline of a leaflet published in 1920, penned by the Heidelberg lecturer Arnold Ruge. Ruge, as well as Philipp Lenard, Heidelberg University's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics, are exemplary of a not insignificant circle of academic “fire-starters”, who already in the early years of the Weimar Republic unleashed a storm of antisemitism. One of the victims of this persecution, which was widely received amongst Heidelberg students of the time and supported by both Lenard and Ruge, was Emil Julius Gumbel. The hounding of Gumbel, which was organised by the National Socialist German Students' League, resulted in in the withdrawal of his venia legendi. Gumbel was prominently featured on a list of thirty-four Germans who were “expatriated” on August 23, 1933. Against the backdrop of these events, the impact of which was felt far beyond Heidelberg, this work illustrates the path of the Ruperto Carola into the catastrophe which was the Third Reich.

José Rizal (1861-1896) studied medicine in Manila and Madrid, completed a special training as an ophthalmologist in Paris, Heidelberg and Berlin, wrote poems and socially critical novels, and attacked with a pointed pen the arbitrary colonial rule of the Spaniards over his Filipino-Tagalog homeland. Although he was a partisan of non-violent decolonization, he was sentenced to death by a Spanish military tribunal for incitement to riot and executed. Dietrich Harth’s biography approaches the life and work of the Filipino intellectual in four steps. In the first part, he sums up the most important phases of the more than 300 years of colonial rule of the Spanish crown and outlines the changes that followed the American regime, with particular emphasis on the idolization of Rizal as a national hero. The second part chronicles the history of the family background, the education and the persecution of Rizal, while the third part is devoted to his diverse, scholarly inspired research interests, which he treated in numerous essays, and not least to his closely related polemics against the colonial regime. The last part deals with the politically as well as literary remarkable novels Noli me tángere and El Filibusterismo, which established Rizal's fame in the Southeast Asian world and which is part of government-ordered reading in all educational institutions in the Philippines. The present biography is the first comprehensive presentation in German that seeks to approach Rizal's way of thinking in a direct way, i.e. by translating it from Filipino Spanish into German.

Dietrich Harth's work was honoured in 2023 with the Ferdinand-Blumentritt-Medaille for outstanding achievements and personal commitment in the field of Philippines and Southeast Asia research.

"If God is male, then the male is God" – this is how the American feminist theologian Mary Daly put it in 1973. Much has happened since then: Different concepts of feminist theology have rethought the central contexts of Christian theology and have dreamed of a more just world for men and women.

This book presents the central course of development of feminist theologies from their beginnings to the present day. At the same time, it outlines an own approach that explores the chances of a contemporary queer gender-conscious theology.

Be it child abuse in the Catholic Church, manipulations of transplant lists or the current Dieselgate cases. Scandals repeatedly shake our trust in organizations. Against the backdrop of the devastation that rule-breaking in and by organizations leaves in our society, it is necessary to address how wrongdoings and crimes are regularly swept under the organizational carpet. To this end, the present anthology brings together contributions of international researchers from various disciplines to explain how organizational wrongdoing can flourish in the shadow of organizational silence despite tightening regulations, and increased efforts of compliance and prosecution.

In the heyday of the University of Heidelberg in the 19th century luminaries such as the chemist Robert Bunsen, the physicist Gustav Kirchhoff and the physiologist Hermann Helmholtz coined the University’s fame. They had their scientific instruments and experimental setups depicted by the University’s drawing teacher Friedrich Veith (1817–1907). A portfolio of some 50 of his drawings from 1856 to 1891forms a unique source for the experimental culture of that period. It also testifies to the importance of visual communication in science and to the role of the many ‘invisible hands’ on which research depends.

"How realistically do media portray the world?" is not only one of the crucial issues of media studies, but also a question that probably every viewer or reader has asked himself at some point. The long-term study Vergessene Welten und blinde Flecken (Forgotten Worlds and Blind Spots) has evaluated, among other things, about 5,100 broadcasts of the German news program Tagesschau from 1996 and from 2007 to 2019 as well as reports from selected leading media (Deutschlandfunk, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel, Brennpunkt, Anne Will, Hart aber Fair, Maischberger, Maybrit Illner, CBS Evening News, The Washington Post, Time, The Guardian and Le Monde). It comes to the conclusion that the countries of the global south (the so-called developing countries or Third World) are massively underrepresented in German reporting.

This excerpt of the database Dictionary of Minor Planet Names (DMPN) gives 169 names of minor planets with ties to Heidelberg to date, i.e. August 2020, out of the total number of 22,129 names. It is an update to the Wissenschaftsatlas der Universität Heidelberg on the occasion of the university's 625 year anniversary in 2011 which listed 97 minor planet names.

Driven by growing interest, our skin is much discussed, esteemed and occasionally also abused. Skin and skin care have changed over time from early history to today. Beauty and ugliness complement each other to create a new quality of attractiveness. In addition, some historical reminiscences are presented to confirm the great interest in our skin, its cultural and historical relevance.

Fälschungen und Bücher haben mehr miteinander zu tun, als man gemeinhin denken könnte. Naheliegend und nicht weiter erstaunlich ist, dass Fälscher Bücher konsultieren, um daraus Vorlagen für ihre Fälschungen zu gewinnen und sich das notwendige Wissen zu deren Herstellung anzueignen.

Doch es gibt noch mehr Bezüge zwischen Fälschungen und Büchern: Denn die Fälschungen werden sodann oftmals mit Hilfe von Büchern lanciert (z.B. mittels Werkkatalogen), in denen sie von getäuschten Autoren unwissentlich als vermeintliche Originale veröffentlicht werden. Im schlimmsten Fall manipulieren Fälscher zu Täuschungszwecken sogar gleich direkt Kataloge, in denen die Fälschungen dann plötzlich als echte Werke erscheinen. Und am Ende können, wie der spektakuläre 'Galileo'-Fall kürzlich zeigte, sogar ganze historische Bücher gefälscht und als vermeintliche Preziosen verkauft werden. Bücher sind für Fälscher jedoch nicht immer nur von Vorteil, sie können ihnen auch zum Verhängnis werden: Wissenschaftliche Bücher enttarnen Fälschungen und lassen deren Schöpfer auffliegen. Entlarvt, aber dafür nun eventuell populär, vermarkten Fälscher nicht selten ihre eigene Geschichte im Rahmen von Autobiografien bzw. werden in Romanen zu literarischen Figuren.

Die Ausstellung 'FAKE: Fälschungen, wie sie im Buche stehen' thematisiert und dokumentiert diese und weitere Aspekte anhand einer Gegenüberstellung von echten Büchern und gefälschten Kunstwerken.

The corona pandemic has changed our everyday life, politics and economy in a way that was previously unimaginable. What was previously taken for granted no longer applies – cracks have appeared in the continuity of our worldview and way of life. Some of them have a revealing effect, others lead to ruptures or can hardly be held together. In the hope of controlling the pandemic our possibilities have been limited. Alternatives – not infrequently stopgaps – are developing into a new 'normal'. How can we react to the pandemic and the problems and dilemmas it causes? How can we embrace the emerging opportunities? The authors develop perspectives for the time with and after Corona.

This book presents a language model based on information and systems theory. Language is understood as a dynamic system that processes information. The elements of this system are connected by weighted relations. These relations and their weights are changeable and allow a probabilistic analysis of language production. This model opens up new ways of analyzing language and the development of new flexible Natural Language Processing technologies by distinguishing between linguistic information that is perceived (“linguistic phenotype”) and information that is not perceived (“recessive information) and by arguing that language has to be seen as a probabilistically organized information system.

The Kalendarium Regine, composed by the French astronomer William of Saint-Cloud in 1296 for Queen Marie of Brabant and translated into old French as Kalendrier la Royne some years later, is an impressive document which illustrates the development of medieval sciences from a pure clerical culture to a lay culture. The Kalendrier reveals the significance of medieval calendars linking science and daily use not only by reflecting the state of knowledge in the field of astronomy and calendar computation around 1300 but also by a detailed didactic commentary which serves as an instruction manual.

Digitization offers a new, efficient tool to support scientific progress. Using modern information systems, research data can be digitally archived in almost all areas and reused more easily if necessary. Nowadays, when collective knowledge has grown enormously, systematization of research data is more important than ever. The E-Science Days 2019, which led to this publication, offered the opportunity to explore new ways of research data computing and helped to enhance digital science through a lively exchange of experiences and innovations.

»Opera – Southwest« illuminates aspects of music theatre, especially at the Southwest German courts of the eighteenth century. New possibilities for the reconstruction of the opera repertoire in Rastatt, Baron Sigismund von Rumling's Musiktheater in Zweibrücken and the special final arrangement of Niccolò Jommellis Didone abbandonata at the Württemberg court, and also the composition process of Johann Adolph Hasse's Dresden operas will be discussed. In addition, three contributions are dedicated to Franz Danzi and his discourse with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The mirror of princes De regimine principum, by Giles of Rome (d. 1316), was not only the most widely disseminated text of its genre, but also one of the most read of all secular writings of the Late Middle Ages . It was translated into most vernacular languages of Western Christianity. This is the first modern bilingual edition of the text, based on the contemporary manuscript Cod. Borgh. 360 of the Vatican Library, and containing all textual variants of the prints Rome 1556 and 1607, that have been used most often by recent scholarship. A short commentary provides added information about where to find the passages quoted by Giles from his sources.

The coming-of-age novel continues to be an important genre for depicting the interrelation of body, subject, and society. Women writers of the Caribbean diaspora return to this genre to describe lived experience and both social inclusion and exclusion, that either support or inhibit personal development within seemingly predetermined power structures. This study investigates and defines the Caribbean-diasporic coming-of-age novels which aim to decolonize the genre of the Bildungsroman. It offers a comparative perspective on the novels written by Angie Cruz, Edwidge Danticat, Ramabai Espinet, and Makeda Silvera, who write about adolescent, maternal, homoerotic, unruly, violated, and rebellious bodies. Close reading focuses on the fictional representations and discourses of hegemonic and subversive body politics under postcolonial and migrant conditions. The book shows how feminist, political writing makes marginalized bodies, identities, and histories visible.

The study’s focus on the body in contexts of migration is political and of high contemporary relevance. Moving bodies are certainly not a new phenomenon of our immediate present. However, the ways these bodies come to matter within the globalized world have been shifting considering  the contemporary paradox of seemingly borderless global markets and free-floating capital but increasing control of certain bodies at quite real national borders. The bodies written in the four novels thus function as social, cultural, and historical documents offering at the same time a powerful statement on political discourses of our time.

There are few topics that divide opinions in social contexts so much as "minorities" and "work". The current interdisciplinary anthology focuses on this complex history of relationships and explores processes of minority inclusion and exclusion in the history of work throughout the 19^th and 20^th century. The different methodological approaches developed by the junior researchers show how productive the perspective of minority research can be for explorations in the history of work.

In the Middle Ages, geomancy was an enormously popular divinatory technique whose similarity to astronomy made it a science in its own right.

One of the most important authors of a medieval geomancy is the Flemish cleric William of Moerbeke. The geomantic treatise that he composed most likely in 1269 was translated into French in the middle of the 14th century. The present work includes a critical text edition and a comprehensive lexical analysis of the first part of the Old French translation. Furthermore, additional background information concerning the text, its language and its subject matter are included to provide a deeper understanding of the text.

A fortification extending over 15 hectares was built in the 4^th century AD in the Roman province of Pannonia at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta. The archaeological investigations undertaken so far on the western shore of Lake Balaton have revealed its defences and monumental buildings as well as numerous burials. Together they give us insights into the 300-year-long occupation of the site.

The publication accompanying the exhibition contains the results of the German-Hungarian excavation initiated in 2009. The potential for visualising the excavated buildings is given particular emphasis, in the shape of 3D reconstructions, evocations of daily life and models.

Eine bunt gemischt Auswahl von 98 Professorinnen und Professoren für Psychologie aus den deutschsprachigen Ländern haben auf knappem Raum etwas ganz Persönliches dargestellt - etwas, das im Alltagsgeschäft der Psychologie keinen Platz findet, mit dem aber etwas angesprochen wird oder in dem etwas anklingt, was den speziellen Reiz der Psychologie oder des Psychologischen für sie ausmacht. Das Buch ist ein buntes Kaleidoskop geworden, es sind im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Streifzüge durch Seelenlandschaften.

Marie Luise Gotheins "Geschichte der Gartenkunst" erschien 1914 und ist bis heute ein Standardwerk. In Preußen geboren, verdankte sie ihrem Mann, dem Nationalökonom und Kulturwissenschaftler Eberhard Gothein, ihr akademisches Leben in Karlsruhe, Bonn und Heidelberg. Früh emanzipierte sich die Mutter von vier Söhnen jedoch mit eigenen anglistischen Studien und Übersetzungen. Die Stadt am Neckar wurde der Autorin zur "dritten letzten Heimat". Briefe und Texte von Max und Marianne Weber sowie von Edgar Salin belegen Gotheins Beitrag zum "Heidelberger Geist".
Jedoch sind dies nur Facetten einer vernachlässigten Persönlichkeit der deutschen Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Neben den Gärten beschäftigten sie religions- und kulturhistorische Fragen, später wandte sie sich dem asiatischen Kulturkreis zu und lernte Sanskrit, um das indische Drama zu erforschen. Für ihre Studien reiste sie nach England, Italien, Griechenland, Indonesien, China und Japan. Der Katalog zur Ausstellung stellt Gotheins Leben, Werk und Reisen in einer Gesamtschau vor.

This manuscript arose from a course which I gave during the winter term 2016/17 at the University of Heidelberg. The attraction for me consisted in showing in detail that the formula of Minkowski-Siegel in Siegel‘s paper from 1935, is equivalent to the statement that the Tamagawa number of the orthogonal group (for a positive definite quadratic form) equals 2. Everybody knows that, but nobody has presented the calculations in detail. Furthermore, one can use the formulas to consider representations of numbers by quadratic forms. The starting point for this is taken from “Quadratic forms” by M. Kneser. Furthermore, by proving the Minkowski inequalities in orthogonal groups, I describe Siegel domains and estimate their volume.

2018 blicken wir auf eine in diesem Buch sehr unterhaltsam dargestellte 150-jährige Geschichte der Universitäts-Augenklinik zurück, lernen die Menschen kennen, die die Klinik geprägt haben, sowie ihre akademischen Ehren und Verwicklungen. Die jeweiligen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen werden aufgezeigt, z. B. von der Einführung des Frauenstudiums („unerhört“) bis zu den ersten Assistenzärztinnen, wie ein Ordinarius berufen wird und wie viel Reichsmark ein „geheimer Hofrat“ verdiente.

Dieses Buch ist daher nicht nur für Mediziner, sondern für alle historisch Interessierten lesenswert.
