Matthäus Merian d.Ä. und die Bebilderung der Alchemie

With remarkable industry the publishers Johann Theodor de Bry and Lucas Jennis brought forth a great variety of printed books on practical and spiritual alchemy between 1615 and 1630. The emerging artist Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was commissioned to illustrate nearly 20 of those publications. In close collaboration with publishers, authors and fellow artists, Merian managed to develop sophisticated, aesthetically appealing and iconic images without having had specific iconographic templates at hand. In this anthology, 16 international authors subject the famous corpus of the Frankfurt Alchemica illustrata to a comprehensive art and cultural-historical analysis.

Berit Wagner has been researching at the department of art history of Goethe University in Frankfurt since 2008. She focuses on the history of collecting and concepts of natural magic in early modern art. Since 2018, she curates the virtual exhibition Matthäus Merian d.Ä. und die Bebilderung der Alchemie um 1600.

Corinna Gannon is an art historian and completed her dissertation on art, magic and alchemy at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in 2022. On behalf of the Dr. Senckenbergische Stiftung she conducted a research project on Frankfurt’s medical and art history and published a monograph on the foundation’s portrait collection. Currently, she works for the Städel Museum.
