Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA)

As a Leibniz Research Institute and Museum for Archaeology, the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM) studies the material legacies from 2.6 million years of human history. The aim is to use archaeological finds and findings to demonstrate and understand human behaviour and actions, human activity and thinking, and the development and change of societies. The RGZM operates worldwide and has so far conducted successful and comprehensive research in various regions of Africa, Asia and Europe, with a geographical focus on Central and Southern Europe as well as the Mediterranean region. The unique concentration of archaeological, scientific, conservative and information-technological competences, combined with important workshops, laboratories and archives, makes it possible to conduct object-oriented research on the archaeology of the Old World (Asia, Africa, Europe) from the beginnings of human history to modern times.

For more than 50 years the RGZM have had their own publishing house, which is not only responsible for scientific editing but also for producing books in-house. This ensures great independence, and the museum as well as the authors benefit from the expertise of the publishing house, its great flexibility, and its network.

The publishing house of the RZGM has published three research journals: Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt; Jahrbuch des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums Mainz (ceased with volume 62, 2015); Restaurierung und Archäologie (ceased with volume 10, 2017), which are available online in open access via Propylaeum, as well as several monographs with current research results from the RZGM. Additionally the publishing house prints results by external international researchers, provided that they are of interest to the scientific questions and goals of the RGZM. Furthermore, the exhibition catalogues, and popular science books, inform the greater public about current research (see publishing program).

In cooperation with Propylaeum-eBOOKS volumes of the following series have been published online in open access:
