Städtische Ensembles und ihre Inszenierungen nach der politischen Wende

The result of a seminar held at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the summer semester of 2018, this volume offers a discerning overview of architectural and urban development in Weimar after the political change. The common perception of the inner city as a still-intact historical centre is critically reflected upon. The extent of construction and its influence on present cityscapes is discussed based on the examination of several different areas. Beginning with the building activities of the 1990s, the articles discuss the creation of urban identity, especially Weimar’s role in the Model City Programme, as UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a European Cultural City in 1999. The main questions focus on dominant themes and defining identifying objects, particularly regarding modern architecture coexisting with the traditional motif of the classic city.

Dr. phil. habil. Eva von Engelberg-Dočkal earned her doctorate with a dissertation on the Dutch architect J. J. P. Oud. She worked as a research volunteer at the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Monument Conservation in Kiel. She works as research assistant at the Hafencity University Hamburg and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. She completed her post-doctoral degree with a thesis on Danish architecture around 1800. In 2017 she took up the deputy professorship for Theory and History of Modern Architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Oliver Trepte M.A. studied Art History, Film Studies, and History at FSU Jena. He is currently working as research assistant at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. His PhD examines the Weimar town surveyor August Lehrmann (1878-1945). His research focusses on the historicity of modern architecture, reform architecture, and the urban history of Weimar. In 2019 he became a member of the graduate college „Identität und Erbe“ at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
