Mehr als nur Sport: GymnAsia in der Antike

The bilingual book accompanying the exhibition “Mehr als nur Sport: GymnAsia in der Antike” was realized as part of a Franco-German research project dealing with the history of the Greek gymnasium in ancient Asia Minor, a part of modern Turkey.
The volume provides an overview of the spread and development of the gymnasium and its role in society, politics and religion from the beginnings in archaic Greece to late antiquity. Special attention is paid to the connection between the gymnasium and the culture of competition that was so characteristic of Greek antiquity.

Pierre Fröhlich is professor of Ancient Greek History at Bordeaux Montaigne University (Ausonius Institute, UMR 5607) and a specialist in the history of the institutions of the Greek polis. Within this framework he has also worked intensively on the culture of the gymnasium. Together with Christof Schuler, he has been directing the DFG-ANR project “GymnAsia. Gymnasia and Athletic Culture in Western and Southern Asia Minor in the Hellenistic and Imperial Periods” since 2020.

Matthias Pichler is a Classical Archaeologist and participates as a researcher in the „GymnAsia“ project at the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute. His research focuses on the history of Greek architecture and settlement, in particular that of Asia Minor, in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods.

Christof Schuler is director of the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy of the German Archaeological Institute and teaches as an adjunct professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. His research interests include the history and epigraphy of ancient Asia Minor and the institutions of Greek cities in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods.
