Eine Untersuchung zu Megalith- und Buckelquader-Mauerwerk an Burgtürmen im Gebiet zwischen Alpen und Rhein
The first part of the volume outlines its scientific aims and the period to be studied. It is followed by a list of definitions for the technical terms used and then a brief overview of the dating methods applied. The second part deals with the definitions of the terms keep – residential tower – donjon, i.e. the areas where the masonry types studied are mainly found. This is then followed by brief essays on the importance, appearance and mythology of these types of masonry and on the construction techniques and site organisation involved.
The first part of the main study itself begins with an analysis of the masonry types identified and detects certain regional differences that cannot be explained solely by the availability of the stone that may have been required. This is followed by an outline of the development of different types of masonry which is based, in terms of chronology, on a series of buildings that can be considered quite firmly dated, either by historical sources or more importantly by dendrochronological dating.
The second part of the main study contains a comprehensive catalogue of all the sites included in Reicke’s analysis. It provides a detailed description, construction history and dating of the individual rusticated and megalithic components studied.
