Zwischen Enklave und Vernetzung

Kunstgeschichte an der TU Darmstadt

Art history at the Technical University of Darmstadt looks back on a 150-year history. This anniversary was the starting point for a research project and a symposium, the results of which are presented in this volume.

A special feature of art history in Darmstadt is, that it is not located at one institute, but is represented by two professorships in the departments of architecture and humanities. This volume puts this unusual constellation into historical perspective and argues that it is precisely the status as an art historical “enclave” that has led to intensive networking.

Dr. Lisa Beißwanger is an art historian with a focus on 20th century art and architecture. She researches and teaches at the departments of Architecture and Art History and Architectural Theory and Science at the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt. She completed her doctorate on performance art in museums in 2020 at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen.

Prof. Dr. Alexandra Karentzos is an art historian with focus on globalization, fashion studies and art since the 19th century. Since 2011, she has been Professor of Fashion and Aesthetics at the Technical University of Darmstadt. From 2004 to 2011, she was Junior Professor of Art History at the University of Trier, and from 2002 to 2004, she was Assistant Curator at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Prof. Dr. Christiane Salge is an art and architectural historian with a focus on early modern art. Since 2017, she has been Professor of Architecture and Art History at the Department of Architecture, Technical University of Darmstadt. From 2003 to 2012, she was a junior professor at Freie Universität Berlin and subsequently project manager of the DFG project “Baukunst und Wissenschaft – Architektenausbildung um 1800 am Beispiel der Berliner Bauakademie”.
