Balver Cave is one of the largest and best-known sites from the Neanderthal period in Germany. The book presents the results of an intensive archaeozoological and taphonomic analysis of the last large-scale excavations in 1939, focusing on the relationship between the Neanderthals and large carnivores. The fauna reveals intensive predation of cave bears in their winter dens. Neanderthals also had to fight with other predators for access to the cave. The introduction of hunting game into the cave and the use of bones to make tools allow a closer look at how Neanderthals used the landscape.
