In order to be able to trace an artwork in the documentation consulted, information such as title, technique, dimensions and date are of central importance. The evidential value of this information must however be critically evaluated. These details are often modified in the course of changes of ownership and auctions, making it difficult or even impossible to establish the definitive identity of a work without comparative illustrations.
