Schöner Wohnen
Standesgemäss Wohnen zwischen 900 und 1600 anhand der Anlagen Altenburg, Burg Klingen und Schloss Altenklingen
Because of the small-scale and ever-changing distribution of power in the Thurgau region, it is home to a considerable number of castle complexes. This allows us to explore research questions in respect of the living conditions of the privileged élite, or so-called nobility. For this purpose, the archaeological and architectural study examined three complexes, the Altenburg castle ruins, Klingen castle and Altenklingen castle, located near each other in the Märstetten region. The results provide an insight into the accommodation requirements and constructional wherewithal of their owners in the periods during which the individual complexes were built. Particular attention was paid to the lords’ desire to express their status, on remarkable construction solutions, on their defensive capabilities and their religious self-expression. It was also possible to locate Klingen castle and to incorporate all three sites in one research project for the first time.
