Images of violence, such as war photos and photos documenting the horrors of the Shoah, have become the subject of ethical controversies. While some hope that these pictures can make us more aware of the suffering inflicted on others, others believe that true empathy cannot be fostered through images and that human suffering can never be adequately represented in any media. Throughout these discussions images are often talked about as independent agents with actual moral responsibilities; images that show evil are thus not understood as images of evil, but as evil in themselves. This book aims to critically examine those assumptions and controversies.

Ist Konsumieren ein Symbol für gesellschaftliche Freiheiten? Oder (re-)produziert Konsum eine Geschlechterordnung, die ‚die Frau‘ auf ein Objekt männlichen Begehrens reduziert? Konsumieren ist Ausdruck von Lust, macht Arbeit und lebt durch Bilder. Die hier vorliegende differenzierte Betrachtung zeigt, wie widersprüchlich Weiblichkeit in Konsumkulturen konstruiert wird. Entsprechend zeigen sich feministische Positionen der 1960er bis 1980er Jahre kritisch gegenüber der Konsumkultur, reflektieren gleichwohl auch die potentielle Macht der Konsumentin und einer feministisch geprägten Konsumästhetik. Diese feministischen ästhetischen Haltungen gegenüber dem Kaufen, dem Benutzen, dem Betrachten oder dem Verzehren käuflicher Dinge werden anhand von Werken weiblicher Künstlerinnen wie Evelyne Axell, Nathalia LL, Martha Rosler, Christa Dichgans, Sanja Iveković und Judith Barry herausgearbeitet.

In April 1906, Arnold Genthe takes a series of photographs of a San Francisco ravaged by earthquake and fires. While his images remain ubiquitous documents of this disaster, Genthe himself is all but forgotten today, the dreamlike, blurry portraits and expressionist dancers that make up most of this once-famous artist’s oeuvre having no place in the canon established by later avant-garde photographers. This book takes Genthe’s most popular images of the 1906 disaster as the starting point for a discussion of the aesthetic, epistemological and sociopolitical conflicts that shaped the various world-views in the Far West at the turn of the century.
