Byzantium in the Sixteenth Century

Constantinople and its Afterlife. Topography, Institutions, Reception

The authors of this volume examine various aspects of the physiognomy and activity of Constantinople/Istanbul in the 16th century. They focus on the urban and institutional framework, the theological, antiquarian and political interests of travelers active in the city, the religious life of local Christians, and the appearance, use, and appropriation of Byzantine monuments. The authors also address more complex issues, such as the familiarity of Western humanist and Renaissance audiences with the physical space of the Ottoman capital or the role of the Orthodox Patriarchate in the organization of Christians in the Ottoman Empire.

Nicholas Melvani ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind byzantinische Skulptur, Epigraphik sowie die Geschichte und Topografie Konstantinopels.
