Penelopes Traum – Die Odyssee als Leitmotiv der documenta 14

The international art exhibition documenta 14 opened its doors in April 2017 – first in Athens and five weeks later in Kassel. The working title learning from Athens was given expression, among other things, through the cooperation with the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMΣT). While the museum building of EMΣT in Athens housed parts of documenta – the traditional main venue of the documenta (the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel) provided a temporary home for the collection of EMΣT. What could be learned from the permanent collection of a national museum little known in the global art world? From the perspective of an art mediator, I will explore the resonances between the exhibitions of documenta and EMΣT. Along the guiding question: „Who is speaking?” we glean an insight into the exchange between two institutions. The odyssey as a leitmotif decodes the fundamental significance of the EMΣT collection for d14.
