Islamische Kunst im Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (1873–1915)

Collection Histories. Islamic Art at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (1873–1915) looks at the paths taken by works from West and Central Asia into the museum. Eleven studies illuminate the interests of the MK&G founding director Justus Brinckmann, trace his acquisitions, and look at the biographies of individual objects – including a Quran manuscript or tiles from a mausoleum in Bukhara. The focus lies on the relations of local and global networks with the history of the art market.

Isabelle Dolezalek is a professor of art history at the University of Greifswald. Her research interests include medieval art, (transcultural) object biographies, as well as the history of museums and collections.

Tobias Mörike is curator for North Africa, West Asia, Central Asia and Siberia at the Weltmuseum Vienna. As a historian, he researches the history of collections, maps and fieldwork.

Wibke Schrape is curator and head of the East Asian and Islamic Art Collections at the MK&G. Her research interests include Japanese art of the nineteenth century, collection history and provenance research.

Tulga Beyerle is director of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (MK&G) in Hamburg since late 2018. With a background in design, she was a freelance design curator from 2001 to 2013. From 2007 to 2013 she was co-director of the Vienna Design Week and form 2014 to 2018 director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, part of the State Collection Dresden.
