Podiumsdiskussion

During the panel discussion different questions of provenance research were discussed especially concerning its sustainable mediation. The discussion started by dealing with the general purpose of provenance research. Then the panel talked about objects of investigation related to the question if it is necessary to investigate even on small objects of daily use which the panel confirmed. In this context the participants discussed the meaning of such objects for both the museums and the descendants of victims of National Socialism. The next topic focussed on critique against provenance research. The panel did not share the fear of the alleged threat of empty museums. Instead, they highlighted the positive effects of a restitution transported by the media. Critique against the late realization of the Washington Principles of 1998 was shared but the results after twenty years were seen to be positive. Afterwards the discussion switched to mediation of provenance research results. The level of involvement of victims and their descendants were part of a controversy amongst the panel as well as the separation or mixing of research and mediation. Critique was raised against many provenance researchers limited contracts of employment and thus an only selective research. By following this path, a lot of knowledge is lost. Finally, the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions. In the end every participant of the discussion formulated a final statement.
