Privater Kunstbesitz und öffentliche Interessen

Die Berliner Leihausstellungen alter Kunst im Deutschen Kaiserreich

From the 19th century, loan exhibitions flourished all over Europe. Local collectors in the bigger cities collaborated in order to present their private art treasures to the public. This exhibition format is a predecessor of today’s museum practise and it contributed to the development of new curatorial strategies. This study examines ten Berlin loan exhibitions between 1872 and 1914, that have been curated by museum makers like Wilhelm von Bode, Max J. Friedländer and Ludwig Justi. It focusses on the potential social implications for the lenders as well as the cultural-political intentions of the organisers of these art shows.

Sandra Kriebel is an art historian and a freelance lecturer in art and design history as well as scientific practice in Leipzig. In 2023, she successfully completed her doctorate with Bénédicte Savoy at TU Berlin. As part of her research on the history of art exhibitions, she deals with curatorial practices and socio-cultural functions of exhibitions during the 'long 19th century', especially with the phenomenon of loan exhibitions. In addition, her research touches on cultural diplomacy and the history of the bourgeoisie, as well as the sociology of lending in a cultural context on the interface of gift economy.
