LIDO-Handbuch

LIDO-Handbuch

LIDO (Lightweight Information Describing Objects) is an XML schema for providing metadata about cultural objects in a variety of digital contexts. Based on the international metadata standard, the LIDO manuals give valuable guidance for a detailed and coherently structured description of cultural objects in local collection management systems. In addition, they provide numerous tips on how the data can be prepared for optimal further use by third parties. This means they are made available in a standardised technical format according to the LIDO XML schema, including statements of all rights associated with the data and extensive use of controlled vocabularies. This enables comprehensive and accurate search results and opens up opportunities for further cross-linking and integration of information. The LIDO manuals from this series focus on art historical categories: Volume 1: Prints and Drawings is dedicated to the in-depth documentation of graphic arts, based on version LIDO v1.0. Volume 2: Painting and Sculpture conforms to the current version LIDO v1.1. and presents an application profile for paintings and sculptures, containing additional mandatory elements when compared to the generic LIDO schema. It includes recommendations for the cataloguing of scientific information and for using controlled vocabularies to improve data quality and reusability.

LIDO-Handbuch für die Erfassung und Publikation von Metadaten zu kulturellen Objekten

Volume 3 of the LIDO Handbook focuses on architecture and other immovable works. In order to aggregate data from different subject-specific information systems on cross-institutional platforms such as the German Digital Library, it is necessary to apply common standards for data content and data structure. This manual is an application profile of the LIDO metadata standard, containing all the data fields relevant for the description of immovable works, e.g. architecture. It explains each data field and provides advice on recording, examples of content and instructions for exporting data in the LIDO XML format. All recommendations are aimed at preparing data from different sources in order to achieve the most comprehensive and accurate search results and to open up paths for further information cross-linking.

LIDO-Handbuch für die Erfassung und Publikation von Metadaten zu kulturellen Objekten: Band 1: Graphik

LIDO-Handbuch, Volume 1

Volume 1 of the LIDO-Handbook, focusing on graphic arts, was developed in close cooperation with the members of the international network Graphik vernetzt. In order to link data from different collection systems in museums and libraries on cross-collection platforms, common standards for data content and data structure have to be applied. This practical guide lists all relevant data elements for the description of drawings and prints. Each data element contains a definition, advice for cataloguing, examples as well as additional information relevant when exporting data to the LIDO-XML format.
