Workshop 3: Erbstücke auf dem Prüfstand

Die Oldenburger „Restitutionssammlung“ als Beispiel für den Umgang mit NS-Raubgut in Privatbesitz

The third workshop, led by Marcus Kenzler, provenance researcher at the Oldenburg State Museum, discussed the “Restitution Collection” of his house and the Stadtmuseum Oldenburg (City Museum) as one way of dealing with Nazi looted objects in private property. The collection established in 2014 offers a possible solution by loaning such objects – often things of daily use – for five years. Within these years, provenance research is conducted. The cooperating museums are not aiming for a permanent acquisition. After five years it is possible to extend the loan or the families who brought in the objects take over possession again. Thus, privately owned objects are not entirely restricted to researchers so their pro-venance can be investigated and displayed in a transparent way.
