Was erschüttert die Denkmalpflege (und ihre Akteur*innen)?

Through a quick overview of mainly German-speaking heritage conservation efforts, this article shows how heritage conservation as an institution that routinely implements emergency safety measures and assists with repair of structures affected by seismic and other physical shocks has itself been shaken up by the calling into question of the fundamental principles of modern monument theory, a skepticism toward institutions in the late 20th century under the sign of postmodernism, and challenges posed by current crises. Each of these impacts on the field of heritage conservation is different in quality, intensity, and impact, but it nevertheless seems apt to describe them all has having shaken up the field.
