Der Tagungsband verbindet aktuelle wissenschaftliche Forschungsergebnisse aus dem Gebiet der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte, Archäologie und Volkskunde mit Fallbeispielen aus der handwerklichen sowie der restauratorischen Praxis und Forschung. Die Beiträge erörtern die Aspekte der historischen Wohnforschung, der Werkstattpraxis oder des Auftragswesens. Es werden Facetten der Firmengeschichte, der Materialkunde und der Sammlungsgeschichte angerissen. V.a. die restauratorischen Beiträge behandeln ein bislang vernachlässigtes Thema: Sie zeigen nicht nur die komplexen Tätigkeitsfelder auf, sondern auch Möglichkeiten im Umgang mit Kachelöfen und Einzelkacheln in Museen und Denkmalpflege im Spannungsfeld zwischen konservatorisch-restauratorischer und handwerklich-traditioneller Herangehensweise. Die 14 Beiträge sind in Deutsch und Englisch zusammengefasst.

The phenomenon of 'cold paint', that is, unfired painting on medieval and early modern glass paintings, has only recently come into the focus of restoration and research. In March 2016, a workshop organized by the National Committee of the Corpus Vitrearum Germany together with the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg was dedicated to this topic. The presentations and lectures are now available in published form.

Today, glass has become commonplace. The former luxury item has become a disposable product.
How does a glass become a masterpiece? Transparency or luminous color? The pure effect of the material or a precious ornamentation of the surface? The collection of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum contains a large stock of drinking and table glasses as well as numerous other objects made of this mostly transparent material. This book presents about 50 of them. It provides insights into the development of hollow glass, beginning with antiquity and extending to the 1950s, and also shows the diversity of the material by means of objects that were used in a wide variety of areas.
Farbfassungen auf Gold und Silber / Paints on Gold and Silver
Many works of goldsmiths’ art once presented themselves in a surprising range of colors, their appearance dominated by the use of paints. Since these treatments were subject to deterioration over time, the polychromatic surfaces are today often only partially extant and were thus given little attention by scholars. In this volume, experts from several European cultural institutions look at this realm of research in terms of art history, restoration and conservation, and with a scientific perspective, spanning a period from the Middle Ages to the early nineteenth century. Complementing Grünes Gewölbe’s 2018 publication Natürlich bemalt: Farbfassungen auf Goldschmiedearbeiten des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts am Dresdner Hof, the first to explore the subject in a comprehensive way, now additional findings are available on this fascinating creative device.
