Handexemplare des Auktionshauses Hugo Helbing als (digitale) Quelle für die Forschung

Founded in 1885, the Munich Galerie Hugo Helbing – with branches in Berlin and Frankfurt – was one of the most important auction houses in Germany. The business was forced to close in 1937. The auction catalogues published during these years include nearly 600 transactions of works by Max Liebermann. More than 1,000 so-called “Handexemplare” of these catalogues – copies kept by the auction house with additional annotations regarding sellers and buyers – are now accessible via the online portal German Sales. They provide information on the provenance of the objects, and on the process and results of the auctions. This article introduces this exceptionally important collection and its digital presentation on German Sales.
