Provenienzforschung zu Papierarbeiten des Brücke-Museums
Ein permanenter Zwischenstand?
A recent provenance research project in the Brücke-Museum, Berlin explored the histories of around 260 works on paper, most of them by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Many of these works were collected in the post-war period by Karlheinz Gabler, Frankfurt am Main and Ferdinand Ziersch, Wuppertal. Though it has been possible to identify certain previous owners, among them Hildebrand Gurlitt, Elsa Glaser and Max Osborn, persistent gaps in the provenance chains have made a definitive conclusion to the research process impossible. The article traces attempts to reconstruct the biographies of selected works from the project.
