Provenienzforschung in Privatsammlungen und falsche Fährten mit Folgen am Beispiel eines Gemäldes von Max Liebermann
The case of Liebermann’s Die Bleiche, part of a German private collection, demonstrates how researching the provenance of other objects from the same, former (here Jewish) collection enabled essential knowledge to be gained about the work in question. For example, the comparison with the reverse sides of other works was decisive for further decoding the origin of the picture, with the family history of the original collectors and transparent cooperation of the parties involved playing a major role.
