Restaurieren nach Erschütterungen

This article explores the delicate balance between preserving the visible scars that bear witness to a monument’s turbulent history and restoring its artistic integrity. Restoration strategies are diverse, extending from minimal intervention that allows the monument to narrate its own history of damage to complete reconstruction that aims to restore the monument‘s original artistic vision. These strategies are deeply intertwined with the perceptual experience of the observer; a monument‘s form, the damage to it, and the story behind it must be aesthetically intelligible to engage the public effectively. This article examines the different thought processes guiding these restoration decisions, which brings to light the social motives of restoration.
