Picture-Editing as Spywork

Emile Lachaud de Loqueyssie's Papers from his Missions to Britain (1857–1861)

This article investigates the picture editing of the French military engineer Emile Lachaud de Loqueyssie (1815-1874) after his reconnaissance missions to Britain around 1860. Loqueyssie was a prolific military spy who throughout Europe to retrieve informations on foreign military architectures and topographies. On his return, he processed his drawings and notes in the Paris offices of the Dépôt des fortifications. He compiled them by gluing or pasting them onto large preparatory sheets which represent a stage in the production of the final maps, plans and views that were stored for military usage. Thus, these materials allow a rare insight both into the field work and into the editorial work of a French military engineer in the 19th century.
