Karikaturen aus dem Nahen Osten, 1850-1940/Caricatures from the Near East, 1850-1940

Almost exactly 100 years ago, caricature was booming in the Near East: Satirical magazines appeared in Istanbul and Cairo and many other cities, humorously tackling issues that were shaking up society at the time.

Numerous topics are still relevant today: resistance to foreign domination by hegemonic powers, the effects of modern technology, demands for democracy and social debates on gender roles.

The exhibition traces the thematisation of these discourses in the medium of caricature and provides information on the historical background, in particular the growing press and the handling of censorship.

The exhibition presents current research from the project ‘What’s so funny? Caricatures as a sphere of communication in the late Ottoman and post-Ottoman context' (project lead Anna Kollatz and Veruschka Wagner, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation). The contributors are members of the international and interdisciplinary working group ‘Caricatures and Cartoons in a Global Perspective’, which is dedicated to questions of caricature research.

Anna Kollatz is a professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Heidelberg. Her research focuses on social discourses in societies shaped by diversity.

Veruschka Wagner's research interests include Ottoman/Turkish caricatures and slavery in the Ottoman Empire at the Department of Islamic Studies and Near-Eastern Languages at the University of Bonn.
