José Rizals Kampf um Leben und Tod - 2., verbesserte Auflage
Facetten einer kolonialismuskritischen Biografie
José Rizal (1861-1896) studied medicine in Manila and Madrid, completed specialist training as an ophthalmologist in Paris, Heidelberg and Berlin, wrote poems and socially critical novels, attacked the colonialist arbitrary rule of the Spanish over his Philippine-Tagalian homeland with a sharp pen and - although he was a partisan of non-violent decolonisation - was sentenced to death by a Spanish military court for inciting insurrection and executed. The biography by Dietrich Harth, a researcher in the field of cultural studies, approaches the life and work of the Filipino intellectual in four stages. In the first part, it summarises the most important phases of the more than 300 years of colonial rule by the Spanish crown and outlines the changes brought about by the American regime that immediately followed, paying particular attention to the idolisation of Rizal as a national hero. The second part, which follows the chronicle, tells the story of Rizal's origins, education and persecution, while a subsequent third part is devoted to his multifaceted, academically inspired research interests, which he treated in numerous essays, and not least to his closely related polemics critical of colonialism. The final part analyses the politically and literarily remarkable novel diptych (Noli me tángere and El Filibusterismo), which established Rizal's fame in the Southeast Asian world and is required reading in all educational institutions in the Philippines. This biography is the first comprehensive account in German that attempts to approach Rizal's way of thinking directly, namely by translating from Filipino Spanish.
The author was awarded the Ferdinand Blumentritt Medal for outstanding achievements and personal commitment in the field of Philippines and Southeast Asia research, sponsored by the Austro-Philippine Society in Vienna.
