The Lutheran reformer Paulus Speratus is not only of significant importance for church history as the author of the famous hymn ‘Es ist das Heil uns kommen her’ (EG 342) and through his role in the ‘Wittenberger Liederjahr’ 1523/24, but also through his reformatory work in Würzburg, Vienna and Iglau. As court preacher in Königsberg and bishop of Pomesania, he contributed decisively to the establishment of the protestant church in Prussia and to securing its Lutheran orientation. This work offers a comprehensive account of the life and work of this reformer, including a catalogue of his correspondence.
