Der Engel der Geschichte
Walter Benjamin, Paul Klee und die Berliner Engel 80 Jahre nach Kriegsende
Catalogue accompanying an exhibition held at the Bode-Museum, Berlin (8 May–13 July 2025).
The focus is on a major 20th century artwork: Paul Klee’s Angelus Novus (1920), which belonged to the Berlin-born philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892–1940), accompanied him into exile and was described by him in one of his last texts as the ‘angel of history’. In addition to Klee’s watercolour, the volume focuses on angels from Berlin museums that were damaged or destroyed by fire during the Second World War.
